At eve, we believe everyone deserves a future defined by safety, dignity and belonging. Guided by hope, faith and community, we’ve evolved our Christian roots to reach as many women and children as possible who require our services.

Christianity is a part of our identity. It’s the story behind who we are, how we began and our name: eve. However, it does not influence the identity and beliefs of our supporters and service users. We lead by love, not limitation.

How We Started…

Established in 1981, we were originally named the Nene Valley Christian Family Refuge. Our purpose came to light when local churches in Northampton responded to desperate calls from women and children experiencing domestic abuse and life-threatening situations. There was a need within the community, and our ancestors answered.

Sadly, this need has amplified over the years with more and more women and children seeking refuge from abusive relationships. Our services, support workers, and locations have had to expand to accommodate the increasing number of people.

Why Are We Called eve?

Although Nene Valley Christian Family highlighted our core value of supporting others, in 2015, our Trustees felt the name and image were no longer relevant to the comprehensive services we were now delivering. We are no longer just a safe place; we are a vital lifeline.

Thankfully, our new identity came quite easily, and surprisingly, was agreed upon by all. The name eve was chosen because it relates specifically to Women. Eve was the first woman. She was created by God out of Adam’s rib, next to his heart, to be protected by him, and she was created equal to Adam. Eve was the first daughter of the living God; she was the first wife and the first mother, and hers was the first family on earth.

Eve, essentially, is ‘every woman’ and in fact, every human. Her DNA is present in a direct, unbroken maternal line of all currently living humans.

The name Eve also means ‘To breathe life’. As an organisation, we want to breathe new life into the lives of those subjected to domestic abuse. Transforming these lives by engaging them in educational and therapeutic activities and interventions. Helping survivors and their families to regain hope and develop the resilience and transformative skills they need to maintain their freedom and security.

Our Ongoing Mission

eve welcomes everyone to lead a safe and empowered life. No matter your age, race, gender, religion, sexuality or background, everyone has the right to live happily and harmoniously. Our aim is to help service users understand that abuse is never their fault, to tackle inequalities and to increase the safety of women and children. By raising awareness of our cause, we can encourage the positive change needed.

Our Guiding Values

The team at eve follows the love and grace that God has gifted us, and we are committed to serving and caring for others in His name. These values remain at our core to offer both practical and emotional support, including:

  • A listening ear
  • A safe place to express feelings
  • Having someone on your side, always
  • Reminding you of and reinforcing your rights
  • Helping to find a sustainable solution
  • Building positive connections
  • Zero judgment, only compassion

We Support Everyone

As we at eve are entitled to our beliefs, everyone else is entitled to theirs. We understand deeply that during difficult periods, it’s important to have something that brings you strength and guides you through. No matter what or who that may be. We work with and accept people from all faiths and of none.

Although Christian values are at our core, we don’t enforce our beliefs on those we work with and support. As an organisation, we have also signed up to and adhere to the Faithworks Charter and the Covenant for Engagement – an enduring covenant between Local Authorities within Northamptonshire and faith-based organisations serving the people of Northamptonshire.
